Images of Me (2)

Back in January I posted an old picture of myself and some friends. I did that at the prompting of one of those friends and I promised more old file photos of yours truly. I have been remiss. The picture above is from this year, this month even. I am setting to cool the first few batches of my now annual holiday mass of peanut blossom cookies.

Dreamy Slide Show

Click on this link or any of the other links to my Flickr account and then double click on the photograph that comes up. You will get a surreal slide show of the view I have shared from my window. Trust me - a three minute journey worth taking.

Golden Golden Gate

The Golden Gate is the straight that connects San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean. It is defined by the headlands of the San Francisco Peninsula and the Marin Peninsula, often referred to as the Marin Headlands. Since 1937, has been spanned by the Golden Gate Bridge.

Until the 1840s, the strait was called the "Boca del Puerto de San Francisco" ("Mouth of the Port of San Francisco"). On 1 July 1846, the entrance acquired a new name. In his memoirs, John C Fremont wrote, "To this Gate I gave the name of "Chrysopylae", or "Golden Gate."

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate straight. As part of both US Highway 101 and California Route 1, it connects the city of San Francisco on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula to Marin County.

The Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge span in the world when completed in 1937, and is an internationally recognized symbol of San Francisco. Since its completion, the span length has been surpassed by eight other bridges. It remains the second longest suspension bridge main span in the United States, after the Verranzano-Narrows Bridge in NYC.

Looking at these pictures one might ponder if the name Golden Gate might have another meaning.

Moody Shadows & Fog

Evening has come to pass The time of day doesn't last Evening has earned its place today

Cold hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colours from our sight Red is gray and yellow white but we decide which is right And which is an illusion

Pinprick holes in a colorless sky Let insipid figures of light pass by The might light of ten thousand suns Challenges infinity and is soon gone Night time, to some a brief interlude To others the fear of solitude

Alcatraz - A Foggy View

Most of the commercial shots you see of Alcatraz are from the San Francisco side of the Bay where you view the infamous prison island out in the middle of the Bay. From my perspective Alcatraz looks to be close to the Golden Gate Bridge, in fact, there are a couple of miles of open water between the island and the bridge.

History books often talk about the 'torture' of seeing and even hearing the sights and sounds of San Francisco from the prison.

Imagine further, the prison completely buried in the fog.

Golden Gate in Fog

The Golden Gate Bridge is nearly ten miles from my window. The zoom lens brings it closer and the fog takes it mysteriously away.

Finally Fog!

And with the fog - some rain our drought plagued hills and dales, figs and grapes need.

We'll get enough moisture to water local bushes and shrubs but not nearly what we need to fill the reservoirs.

The key to our year-round water supply is snowpack in the Sierras. Right now we are hovering around 15% of normal. Estimates are we would need snowfall every day through April to get back to full. In the meantime, rainy days are my favorite days - particularly this day.

High Sky

Many years ago my neighbor was a astronomy buff. He would be out in his backyard whenever some significant event was happening in the heavens. And since his knowledge was far beyond mine, the significant events were often very cool and I got to see many of them through his telescope. Early one evening he was out watching a colorful sunset. Over the back fence he told me about the phenomenon he called "High Sky." Quite simply you have clouds and a setting sun that is blocked from a direct view by more low clouds on the horizon. This allows the sun to indirectly illuminate the other parts of the cloud cover and gives up long, colorful displays. We had one of those recently.

Fog City

I regret that I am not adept enough to fully capture what I see with my eyes. One particularly fascinating phenomenon I get to witness is the fog rolling in from the Pacific. Whether it creeps through the Golden Gate or oozes over the hills of Marin or slowly swallows the city of San Francisco, I find the fog and marine layers provide some of the most compelling views out my window. With our late winter season just now arriving, this is my first attempt to deliver the Fog City views for you. Hopefully our drought conditions will moderate and I will have more chances to film the fog.

Night Landscape

My first attempt at using the night landscape option on the camera. The photo above is of the new East half of the Bay Bridge.

A bit earlier.

When they say 'night view' they mean it. The sun had long set but the longer exposer still captured the fading sunset.

Full Moon

Two evenings ago I went out for a walk just after dark. I knew the full moon would just be rising over the Berkeley Hills. For non-locals, the hills are on the East side of my building. My apartment's view is due West, so I knew just before dawn the orb would be setting on my side of the world. Here are some photographic observations of the event.

For locals and others, that is Mt. Tamalpais below the setting celestial body.

Dawn began to break as the Orb of Night slid towards the horizon.

The orange of the atmosphere began tinge the view.

Morning pink arrives.
